With its 204-acre campus—the largest in New York City—CSI combines the resources of a major research university with the intimate scale of a comprehensive college. Today, CSI enrolls over 11,000 students and has earned national recognition for its return on investment, ranking among Forbes magazine’s “Top 25” schools for three consecutive years.
CSI’s origins trace back to two predecessor institutions: Staten Island Community College, established in 1956 as the borough’s public institution offering associate’s degrees, and Richmond College, founded in 1965 as an upper-division college providing baccalaureate and master’s degrees. The fiscal crisis of the mid-1970s prompted CUNY to merge these two institutions in 1976, creating the College of Staten Island under the leadership of Dr. Edmond L. Volpe. The move consolidated operations from multiple locations into a single, state-of-the-art campus that has since become a hub for academic excellence and community engagement. Under President Dr. Timothy G. Lynch, the college continues to invest in infrastructure, with recent improvements including library renovations, new exterior staircases, a tranquility garden outside Dolphin Cove, and upgraded athletic complexes.
