Since its founding in 1926, Embry-Riddle has grown from a fledgling flight school into a global university serving more than 33,000 students annually across residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Florida, and Prescott, Arizona, as well as its Worldwide Campus. With over 100 degree programs spanning aviation, applied science, business, computers and technology, engineering, security and intelligence, and space, Embry-Riddle has established itself as the unquestioned leader in its field, earning eight top-five rankings from U.S. News & World Report, including recognition for aerospace engineering, overall quality, innovation, and academic programs for student veterans.
The Embry-Riddle story begins on December 17, 1925—exactly twenty-two years after the Wright brothers’ historic first flight—when barnstormer John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. The following spring, the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation with a simple but ambitious plan: to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to capitalize on the booming post-World War I interest in flying.
The early years were marked by both triumph and adversity. After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang back to life as World War II erupted in Europe. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle centers in Florida to be trained as pilots and aviation technicians, laying the foundation for the institution‘s reputation as a leader in aviation education. During the Korean War, the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in airplane maintenance fundamentals, further cementing its military connections.

The mission carried the Embry-Riddle-built LLAMAS camera system, developed by 47 undergraduates who earned flight hardware certification through the project.
As Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University approaches its centennial in 2026, it stands as the undisputed global leader in aviation and aerospace higher education. From its origins as a barnstorming flight school to its current status as a university serving more than 33,000 students across residential, worldwide, and international locations, Embry-Riddle has remained true to its founding mission: to teach the science, practice, and business of aviation and aerospace. The university‘s consistent top rankings, unparalleled flight training infrastructure, deep industry partnerships, and distinguished alumni network all testify to the effectiveness of this focused mission. For students who dream of careers that reach beyond the sky, Embry-Riddle offers not merely an education but a launchpad—a place where, as the university itself declares, “the sky is not the limit—it’s just the beginning”.
